When the machines are autonomous but the stakes are high, the interface that controls them has to be flawless. That's what we were asked to design.

Designing for autonomous haulage systems in mines and quarries means designing for environments where a confusing interface isn't just frustrating, it's dangerous. Every interaction had to be immediate, unambiguous, and built for operators who don't have time to think twice.

User experience focus

The core challenge was designing a control interface for autonomous vehicles that operators could trust completely under pressure.

Industrial mobile apps carry a different weight than consumer products. The operators using this app are managing heavy autonomous equipment across complex terrain in real time. There's no room for confusion, no tolerance for unclear feedback, and no margin for error. Every design decision had to prioritize clarity, speed, and confidence — in that order.

Project research

We studied how operators actually work in the field and what they need from a control interface when things get critical.

Understanding the operational environment was the foundation of everything. We dug into how operators interact with autonomous systems under real working conditions. The distractions, the time pressure, the physical environment. That research shaped an interface designed not for ideal conditions, but for the conditions operators actually face on site every day.

Project result

A mobile control interface built for the demands of autonomous haulage in some of the most challenging industrial environments in the world.

The final app gave operators clear, confident control over Pronto's autonomous haulage systems from a mobile device. Designed for rugged real-world conditions, the interface prioritized speed of comprehension and ease of action, so operators could manage complex autonomous operations without the interface ever getting in the way.
