UX design for ToolBox by SBD Lab, a mobile app built to help owners of Stanley Black & Decker's
iconic tool brands register products, access support, and unlock exclusive perks. We were brought in to make
a utility app feel like something people actually wanted to use.
The challenge wasn't just functional, it was emotional. Stanley Black & Decker needed features that felt as bold and reliable as the tools their customers already trusted.
This project was a reminder that utility and delight aren't mutually exclusive. A warranty feature doesn't have to feel like paperwork. It can feel like a reward. Getting that balance right for a brand as established as Stanley Black & Decker required equal parts UX discipline and creative thinking.
User experience focus
The core challenge was making something genuinely useful feel genuinely fun without losing the rugged, on-brand identity Stanley Black & Decker is known for.
ToolBox already gave users the ability to register tools, access manuals, manage warranties, and unlock discounts. What it needed was a UX layer that made those features feel less like a chore and more like a benefit. Every screen had to earn its place because the brand couldn't afford anything that felt generic or off-tone for a company built on toughness and trust.
Project research
We dug into how tool owners actually interact with product apps and where the drop-off points were hiding.
Research focused on understanding what motivates tool owners to register products and what typically stops them. The insight was straightforward: users wanted to feel rewarded, not processed. That finding directly shaped the direction of the extended warranty feature and set the tone for every interaction pattern we designed around it.
Project result
We designed a scratch-off warranty experience for mobile and an extended warranty certificate users could save or print.
The scratch-off interaction brought a moment of genuine delight to what had always been a purely transactional feature. On-brand, intuitive, and built for smart mobile devices, it gave users a satisfying way to unlock and access their extended warranty. We also designed a downloadable and printable warranty certificate, giving users a tangible record of their coverage in a format that matched the quality of the tools themselves.
